Why did I become a personal trainer?
My interest in fitness started when
was 17 and working as a café assistant
in Petone.
The café was in a large company
making cigarettes! But they had a small
gym for employees use. I had been
curious about exercise and gyms since
a good friend had joined a gym, but
I was too scared to go!
It turned out that not many of the
staff used it, so the gym was deserted
most of the time, so on one such a day
I nervously poked my head around the
corner…
Well… that was the beginning!
I loved it and soon thought that I “knew
it all” as you often think after
6 months of working out! And when a
good friend lost a whole lot of weight
on the weight watchers program, I suggested
that we join a gym together so we could
tone up and reshape his new body.
We decided to do it right and saw a
trainer for a few sessions and one
day after we had been going for a
while, my friend said “you should
be doing this for a living!” Ha,
I thought, I had no qualifications,
no idea really on what to do, but
something inside me thought, “Wait,
why not? I'd be a really good trainer!"
and so I did, I got my qualifications
and went for it and have never looked
back.
I love this job so much. There is nothing
that compares to the feeling you get
when you help someone achieve their
goals!
I say “go for it — any
age — it’s never too late
to get started!”
